Earn Extra Cash Online: Dozens of Legit Ways to Make Money From Home
Not everybody needs (or wants) another job. Sometimes you just need extra money — grocery money, gas money, Christmas money — in the little pockets of time you already have. 💛
That's what this list is. These are the legit ways to earn extra cash online and around town without applying for a position: cashback on shopping you're already doing, surveys in the school pickup line, research studies that pay real money, stuff around your house you can sell, and skills you can rent out by the task. Pick two or three that fit your life and stack them — that's how extra cash actually happens.
Honest note from me: some of the links below are my referral links, and I may earn a little when you use them (thank you!). Where I don't have a link, I've linked the site itself. Nothing here is a get-rich-quick promise — it's real, small, steady money.
Shopping & Cashback (Money Back on What You Already Buy)
Ibotta — Cash back on groceries and everyday shopping; activate offers in the app before you shop and scan your receipt after.
Rakuten — Earn a percentage back when you start your online shopping through Rakuten; paid quarterly by check or PayPal.
Receipt Hog — Snap photos of your receipts and earn coins you can trade for PayPal cash or gift cards.
Upside — Claim offers in the app before you buy gas, groceries, or restaurant food nearby, then get cash back.
CoinOut — One of the easiest receipt apps: almost any receipt counts, and there's no hunting for specific offers first.
Fetch Rewards (use code T8W3Q) — Scan any receipt for points, trade points for gift cards. Set-it-and-forget-it money.
ReceiptJar (use code KRISUMKGH) — Another receipt scanner; upload receipts, earn points, cash out for gift cards or sweepstakes entries.
Rewards Sites (Surveys, Games & Offers in One Place)
Swagbucks — The classic all-in-one: surveys, games, offers, and cash-back shopping, paid in PayPal cash or gift cards.
MyPoints — Swagbucks' sister site (same parent company), so it works much the same way — worth running both.
InboxDollars — Get paid for surveys, offers, games, and even reading paid emails; balances show in dollars instead of points.
KashKick — Games, surveys, and offers with the pay shown upfront; cash out to PayPal at $10.
Freecash — A newer rewards site with game and app offers that can pay better than surveys alone.
PrizeRebel — Surveys and offers for PayPal cash and a big gift-card catalog; been around for years.
Run Errands & Pick Up Local Gigs
Instacart Shopper (use code KUSHER37185 when you apply) — Shop and deliver other people's grocery orders and get paid per batch; you choose when to work.
DoorDash (Dasher signup) — Deliver food and store orders in your own car on your own schedule. My market note: around Springfield the sign-up flow mentions a first-delivery timeframe and terms can vary by area, so read the current offer when you sign up.
Field Agent — Small paid tasks in stores you're already visiting: photos of displays, price checks, quick audits, and mystery-shopping-style jobs.
Design & Sell Products
Printables on Etsy — Design planners, checklists, wall art, or worksheets once, then sell the digital file over and over. (This is the lane I'm building myself — my shop is NetworkingMama on Etsy!)
Print-on-Demand — Upload a design and let a company print and ship it on shirts, mugs, and more; you earn a royalty per sale. The big names are Printful and Printify.
Stock Photography — Sell photos you take anyway through sites like Adobe Stock and Shutterstock; royalty income is slow but genuinely passive.
Fitness Wagers (Read This One Carefully)
HealthyWage and DietBet let you bet on your own weight-loss goals: hit the goal and you win money; miss it and you lose your stake. I'm listing them because they're legit and popular — but be honest with yourself here: your money is at risk. Only wager what you can afford to lose, and only if the bet itself motivates you.
Focus Groups & Research Studies (The Best Pay-Per-Hour on This Page)
User Interviews — One of the highest-paying study sites; many interviews and tests pay $50–$150+. I don't have a referral link for this one — just go sign up, it's worth it.
Respondent — Professional research studies, often $100+ for an hour. Apply for the ones matching your background; acceptance isn't guaranteed.
CloudResearch Connect — Online studies from universities and companies; you see the pay before you accept a study.
Rare Patient Voice — If you or someone you care for lives with a health condition, this panel pays patients and caregivers (often around $120/hour) for surveys and interviews about their experiences.
Dscout — App-based research "missions" — videos, diaries, interviews — typically paying $25–$150 per project.
FocusGroup.com — A long-running panel for online and in-person focus groups and studies.
Survey Squad — Connects members with focus groups, online communities, and in-home product-use tests.
Experience Dynamics — A usability research panel running paid one-on-one interviews and product studies.
20|20 Panel — Focus groups and research panels from 20|20 Research, online and in select cities.
Share Your Advice & Knowledge
JustAnswer — Verified experts (techs, vets, mechanics, nurses, and more) get paid to answer people's questions online. You'll need credentials in your field.
Clarity.fm — If people already ask you for business or career advice, Clarity lets you charge by the minute for expert phone calls.
Survey Panels (Small Money, Zero Skill Required)
PaidViewpoint — Short, calm opinion surveys with a $15 PayPal cash-out. One of my long-time favorites.
AttaPoll — A phone app with frequent short surveys and a low cash-out threshold.
Survey Junkie — One of the best-known survey sites; points convert to PayPal or gift cards.
Branded Surveys (use code KUSH7464) — Surveys plus a loyalty program that boosts your earnings the more you participate.
Pinecone Research — A respected invite-style panel for product surveys, with occasional product tests. Spots open by demographic, so apply when you see it open.
Survey Savvy — A panel I've used for years — and yes, they really pay; I cashed a $64 check from them this fall. Surveys plus an optional passive app for extra earnings.
Prolific — Academic research studies that pay fairly and treat participants well. It's very popular, which means there can be a waitlist — worth joining and waiting your turn.
Sell Your Used Stuff
Mercari — List almost anything from your phone; Mercari handles the shipping label. My go-to for shipping smaller finds.
Decluttr — Scan the barcodes on old phones, tech, CDs, DVDs, and games, ship them free, and get paid without listing anything.
ThredUp — Send in a bag of clothing and let them photograph, list, and sell it; you earn when items sell.
Facebook Marketplace — Best for local, no-shipping sales: furniture, kids' gear, household items. Meet safely and price in whole dollars.
Sell Crafts & Handmade
Etsy — The home for handmade, vintage, and digital downloads. I sell my own printables and guides in my NetworkingMama Etsy shop — come see what this looks like in real life!
eBay — The classic marketplace for handmade, vintage, and collectibles — another long-running option if you're already set up there.
Rent Out Your Skills by the Task
Fiverr — Package a skill — writing, design, voice work, data entry, you name it — as a service and let buyers come to you.
Upwork — The biggest freelance marketplace for longer projects: writing, virtual assistance, design, marketing, and more.
Mystery Shopping
BestMark — One of the largest mystery shopping companies, with retail, restaurant, and automotive shops.
Market Force — Fast-food and retail shops in lots of areas; a common first mystery shopping company.
IntelliShop — Mystery shops across retail, dining, and services, with clear shop guidelines.
IPSOS (iShopFor Ipsos) — A major research company with a big mystery shopping arm — gas stations, retail audits, and more. One of the companies I've shopped with myself.
Usability Testing (Get Paid for Your Opinion of Websites)
UserTesting — Record yourself using websites and apps while thinking out loud; pay per test to PayPal.
Userlytics — Website and app tests plus occasional live interview studies.
Trymata (formerly TryMyUI) — Narrated website tests with pay per completed test.
Short Tasks & Microtasks
Clickworker — Small online tasks — text creation, categorization, data work — you can do in spare minutes.
Amazon Mechanical Turk — Amazon's microtask marketplace; lots of tiny HITs, best once you learn which requesters pay fairly.
Fancy Hands — Virtual assistant microtasks (calls, research, scheduling) starting around $3–$7 per task.
Humanatic — Listen to recorded business calls and categorize them; pay varies by category accuracy and difficulty.
More Ways to Earn (Fun & Unusual Ones)
Atom (formerly Squadhelp) — Enter naming contests for businesses and brands; winners get paid. Creative brains do well here. PickyDomains works similarly for domain names.
Smartphone photography — Sell the photos on your phone through Foap, EyeEm, or Twenty20.
Earn by receiving mail — US Monitor and the Small Business Knowledge Center pay decoys to receive and report marketing mail. Weird, legit, and very low effort.
Medium Partner Program — Write articles and earn based on member reading time; Textbroker pays per word for client writing if you'd rather skip the audience-building.
Rev — Freelance transcription and captioning paid per audio minute; a classic starter in the transcription world.
Use your home — Rent spare storage or parking space on Neighbor, or look into hosting with Airbnb if you have a suitable space (hosting is a bigger commitment — read everything first).
And a few more quick ones: Slice the Pie pays small amounts for short music and product reviews, and Cambly pays native English speakers to have casual video conversations with English learners — no teaching certificate needed.
Before You Dive In — My Honest Tips
1. Start with the fast lanes. Receipt apps and one or two rewards sites pay soonest. Research studies pay best per hour but take longer to land. Run both tracks at once.
2. Use a separate email for survey sites. Your main inbox will thank you, and you'll never miss a study invite in the clutter.
3. Never pay to join. Every site on this page is free to sign up for. Any "opportunity" that wants your money first is not an opportunity.
4. Track what actually pays YOU. Give a site a fair two weeks, then keep the earners and drop the time-wasters. Your stack should be personal.
And when you're ready to turn extra cash into actual income, this is the roadmap I wish someone had handed me at the start:
Pick your first two sites and sign up today, mama — future you says thanks. 💛
